Studio for Two Artists
This former tractor garage/wood shed was renovated into a studio space for two artists. The building was originally divided by an interior wall into two rooms. The redesign utilizes this existing layout to provide the necessary qualities of light and space to suit each artist’s respective practice. Vaulted ceilings, a direct indoor/outdoor connection, and abundant southern light animate the architect’s work; below in the second studio, a gallery wall and even northern light assists the painter.
The renovation sought to sufficiently modernize the existing building while maintaining the 100-year-old sense of history and character inherent to the structure. This was accomplished by retaining and lightly-restoring the original concrete floors, timbers, and windows, all while adding new insulation, wiring, lighting, plumbing, siding, and interior wall finishing. VG fir single light French-doors were added, along with a large cedar deck, to enhance the building’s connection to the pastoral surroundings and inspire the artists working within.
