Weaver’s Cottage
The Weaver’s Cottage (named for a tapestry artist who once inhabited the space) was built on a farm in Gig Harbor, Washington, in 1899. This renovation sought to maintain and celebrate the historic elements of the structure while sufficiently modernizing the building to a current standard of living. Such improvements included: reinforcing the structure with beams salvaged from the property; updating the wiring and lighting; installing new plumbing fixtures and septic hookup. The kitchen, loft, and adjoining ladder was redesigned to be more usable within the small 15’ x 19’ total footprint.
Extra emphasis was placed on retaining and recreating the home’s historic charm. The rippled single-pane windows were restored, as well as the original milled-on-site shiplap siding covering the interior walls. The original floor was unrecoverable, but new lapped flooring was acquired to precisely mimic the original.
Overall, the renovated cabin offers a comfortable, modern getaway with the charm and sense of place inherent to its history.
